For this project that we need to choose a designer as our main idea and do some research for our own work. Therefore, I choose ‘Dressing is easy’ as my first reference and start with my work. Firstly, the designer of ‘Dressing is easy’ is Hussein Chalayan. He is a famous Turkish fashion designer. From my research, I found that he has his own different design style of his project. For example, the clothes and dress that he designed are special. He uses the totally inconformity material to decorate the clothes, such as, wire, bulbs and metal plate which should not appear. For this reason, people call this design style is ‘Radical design’. The radical design means superrealism and abstractionism that some people may feel difficult to understand it. And Hussein Chalayan also combines the human body, fashion, technology, science and architectures together. He likes to connect the music, movie with his fashion design, that is the reason that he called fashion is a kind of performance, not fashion.
From these reasons of my designer Hussein Chalayan, I noticed that the characteristics of his work is a kind of ‘Strange’. Using the special materials and thinking to do with my own work. The different characteristics could represent the differences between Hussein Chalayan and others. Therefore, more original ideas could give people s sense of freshness, that is the best way to recognize who is Hussein Chalayan.
Therefore, I start drawing the picture around UTS buildings. First of all, I do some simple drawing like one perspective and two perspective hand drawing. Then, I start to observe some special architectures of UTS. For example, the main building and the building of commerce. These two buildings are very famous in UTS, each of them has their own characteristics. The main building likes a neat cuboid with the brown colour and the commerce building has the most strange appearance and structure. Therefore, I decided to choose the commerce building as my final object.
I start drawing the commerce building by using the exaggerated shape and structure. Because as we all know, this architecture has the specialist construction, the curve line, anomaly and dissymmetry structures. I try to make these characteristics more significant and use curve line to replace all the straight line. I also make the cube become bigger than the real building. That could represent the style of my designer Hussein Chalayan, radical design. Because his style is superrealism, these features are all suit for it, just like the material that he used in his clothes projects. And I also draw the windows of this building, because that could show the details of one project and seems like more realistic. I think that could give audience a feeling of combine the realistic and abstract together to make it become more remarkable. I also draw the shadow od this building, but from my project we could see that the shadow is not perfect and finished. There are some shadow out of the building’s frame. However, it is done on my purpose. I talk about the designer’s style before, and for make them more connection with each other, I find many different ways to show it. The shadow is a great method to represent, the unfinished shadow could express the superrealism, out of frame means not regular and unusual. Therefore, that is my final work to represent this reference ‘Dressing is easy’, and the process of my study.
